Responsibilities:

The Senior Software Engineer’s main role is to design, build, and maintain software applications in their respective domain. This is a hands-on technical development role and post holders will be highly proficient software engineers in at least one area of web/application development. They will often take responsibility for small to medium sized projects and will be expected to delegate tasks and oversee the work of junior/mid-level software engineers.
 
The role involves working with a range of stakeholders: business “product” owners, Scrum Masters/project managers, other development teams, infrastructure, service desk, and the Press architectural team in order to design software solutions and to resolve issues.

Requirements:
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant IT/Software related degree.
  • 4-5+ years of software development expertise within an area of web technologies.
    • PHP, Concrete5 or other CMS frameworks, CSS & HTML
    • JavaScript, jQuery and related frameworks.
    • REST Web services
  • Ideally to have gained industry certification in one of the above areas.
  • Experience of data manipulation, tuning, and performance work across a range of industry databases including: Oracle or MySQL.
  • To be comfortable with using industry standard tools and practices in the Software Development world including SVN or GIT source code control systems.
  • Experience of working within an Agile development process (Scrum or similar).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate, with colleagues of all levels across the Press.
  • Able to supervise junior/mid-level software engineers on day to day tasks, supporting their development and taking responsibility for their deliverables.
  • Solid solution design, analysis and documentation skills plus experience of Web infrastructure and related technology areas and modern day “DevOps” engineering practices and processes.
  • Knowledge in search technology i.e. SOLR, ElasticSearch
  • Knowledge in Unit testing or TDD
  • Knowledge in No-SQL is a plus i.e. MongoDB
